This month at the Carnegie Library we are seeing stars both figuratively and literally. We closed September with a presentation to the Auburn City Council updating them on the completed projects, upcoming tasks, fundraising and our parking plan. With a little planning and a partnership with the Auburn Journal, visitors to the Carnegie have access to 127 parking spots along E Placer Street. This provides parking on a gentler slope than Almond Street and reduces inconvenience to our neighbors. We also acknowledged and thanked the numerous individuals, businesses, and organizations who have helped the AFTA team get to this point with the Carnegie Library. We had hoped to see completion by October 4, but construction operates on its own timeline. In the meantime, the foyer has been completed! We have lights, completed flooring on the stairs, and tile at the entry. Many thanks to electrician Rick Solomon and Gold Country Rotary for their efforts. The most amazing transformation, however, involves the carpet. While the AFTA team has organized some fundraisers to pay for new carpet, we still had to contend with a functional though tired, lightly stained carpet until such time as we are able to replace it. Yes, it sounds crazy, but in the hands of local artist Hannah Nickolson of Nicholson van Altena Glass, the result is an incredible ethereal experience that lets visitors walk amongst the stars. It’s absolutely stunning and almost looks 3-D in photos. We mentioned fundraising for carpet. The fundraiser featured a star of a different type – Konstantin, an internationally renowned Russian pianist who came to Auburn to accompany the Auburn Symphony in a performance. He generously offered to play for an invitation only audience on October 4, in support of fundraising for our new carpet. As the seasonal change approaches, we have some exciting news about changes at the Carnegie Library! The Rotary Club of Auburn completed the main floor interior repair and painting. In addition, the Gold Country Rotary has stepped in to paint and restore the foyer! There will be new flooring on the steps and tile in the entry. The Carnegie Library enjoys tremendous support from the community, and the AlmostFreeToAll (AFTA) team is always watching for partnership opportunities. We are happy to announce our second cause for celebration. AFTA and the Auburn Journal entered into an agreement for use of the 29 spaces in the Auburn Journal parking lot off East Placer Street. This partnership helps address one of the biggest concerns about the location of the Carnegie Library – where visitors will park. As fabulous as that is, we have even bigger news! Our third big announcement is that construction starts this month on the first-floor accessible restroom. This exciting project means we are on the cusp of being able to open the Carnegie to limited public usage.
